Cholera Vaccine at Chappells Pharmacy

Protect yourself and your family against Cholera, a severe diarrhoeal disease that can cause life-threatening dehydration if left untreated. Chappells Pharmacy offers professional vaccination services to ensure your peace of mind when travelling to affected regions or humanitarian crisis areas.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease is characterised by sudden onset of severe watery diarrhoea and is primarily spread through:

  • Consuming food or water contaminated with the faeces of infected persons
  • Poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene practices
  • Consuming raw or undercooked seafood from contaminated waters
  • Direct contact with infected individuals in poor hygiene conditions

Most people infected with cholera experience mild or no symptoms, but in severe cases, the disease can cause profuse diarrhoea, vomiting, and leg cramps. Without prompt treatment, severe dehydration, shock, and death can occur within hours.

Cholera remains endemic in many parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Central and South America, particularly in areas with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and improper food hygiene.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The Cholera vaccine is strongly recommended for:

  • Travellers visiting areas with active cholera outbreaks
  • Aid workers and relief personnel in refugee camps or disaster areas
  • Healthcare workers in cholera-endemic regions
  • Those travelling to high-risk areas with limited access to medical care
  • People with reduced stomach acidity (achlorhydria) or taking medication to reduce stomach acid
  • Those travelling to endemic areas who have conditions that make them more vulnerable to severe illness
  • Travellers planning extended stays in high-risk countries
  • Those visiting friends and family in cholera-endemic regions
  • Anyone planning to work with water and sanitation systems in endemic areas
  • People attending large gatherings or events in affected regions

FAQs About Cholera Vaccine

There are many questions about the Cholera vaccine, we have selected frequently asked questions about this service. If you do not see your answer, please contact us.

How long does the Cholera vaccine last?
After completing the initial course, protection lasts for about 2 years for adults and children over 6 years, and 6 months for children aged 2-5 years. Booster doses are recommended after these periods if continued protection is needed.
Does the Cholera vaccine protect against traveller's diarrhoea?
The oral cholera vaccine Dukoral® provides some protection against ETEC (Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli), which is a common cause of traveller's diarrhoea. However, it doesn't protect against all causes of traveller's diarrhoea, so maintaining good food and water hygiene remains essential.
Are there any dietary restrictions when taking the Cholera vaccine?
Yes, you should avoid food and drink for 1 hour before and 1 hour after taking the vaccine, as food and liquid in the stomach can reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine. Our pharmacists will provide complete instructions.
Is the vaccine safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women?
The Cholera vaccine is not routinely recommended during pregnancy but may be considered when the risk of cholera is high. It's considered safe for breastfeeding women. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss their individual circumstances with a healthcare professional.
